Mucormycosis on Covid-19 recovering patients
doctors are now reporting a rash of cases involving a rare infection - also called the "black fungus" - among recovering and recovered Covid-19 patients.
Why-mucormycosis to covid-19 patients?
1.Improper use of steroids to treat Covid-19 patients. The reduced count of lymphocytes(Medicines used in treating Covid-19 tend to bring down the count of lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are one of the three types of white blood cells whose job is to defend our body against disease-causing pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites.) leads to a medical condition called lymphopenia, making way for opportunistic fungal infection in Covid-19 patients.
2.Poorly managed diabetes.
3.There is a higher chance of occurrence of mucormycosis in patients whose immune system is not functioning well (since Covid-19 treatment tends to suppress the working of the immune system, it places such patients at a higher risk of contracting the black fungus infection.)
These are some reasons that causes mucormycosis.
The key to controlling the black fungus are:-
1.judicious use of steroids and good control of diabetes. what are steroids and how in cause mucormycosis?
Steroids are an essential life-saving drug for Covid patients
Steroids reduce inflammation in the lungs for Covid-19 and appear to help stop some of the damage that can happen when the body's immune system goes into overdrive to fight off coronavirus. But they also reduce immunity and push up blood sugar levels in both diabetics and non-diabetic Covid-19 patients.
2.Be careful about when to give steroids and their dosage,
3.Good control of blood sugar levels,
Q1.After how many days mucormycosis can be detected after recovery from corona with the use of steroids?
Most of the patients contracted it between 12 to 15 days after recovery from Covid-19.
Q2.After covishield vaccination, can mucormycosis develop when vaccinated person in contact with patient of COVID positive person?
Mucormycosis (Black fungus) is not a communicable disease and 90-95% of patients that are diabetics who are on steroids.fungus are also seen on early COVID patients which is proving to be a challenge.
